Honey Sriracha Shrimp Recipe:

Ingredients

For the Fried Shrimp:

  • 1¾ cup all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 tablespoon Old Bay Seasoning
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha
  • ½ cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • salt, to taste
  • freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • 1 pound jumbo or extra jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • neutral oil (such as canola or vegetable), for frying

For the Honey Sriracha Dipping Sauce:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tablespoons Sriracha
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ½ teaspoon fresh lemon zest
  • salt, to taste
  • freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons thinly sliced scallion

Directions

  1. In a shallow bowl, combine ¾ cup of the all-purpose flour with the Old Bay Seasoning. In a separate shallow bowl, lightly beat the egg, buttermilk, and 1 tablespoon sriracha sauce. In a third shallow bowl, combine the remaining 1 cup of all-purpose flour, cornmeal, garlic powder, basil, and salt and black pepper to taste. Stir until well mixed and set the three bowls aside.
  2. Fill a saucepan or wide pot with neutral oil until it rises about 2 inches up the sides and place it over medium-high heat. Use a candy thermometer or instant read thermometer to monitor the temperature until it reaches 350℉.
  3. While the oil is heating, coat the shrimp using a 3-step process. First, lightly toss each shrimp in the seasoned flour mixture. Then dip each shrimp in the egg mixture and transfer to the cornmeal mixture. Toss the shrimp until evenly coated in the cornmeal, then transfer to a baking sheet or plate until all shrimp are coated.
  4. Once the oil has come up to temperature, carefully add a few shrimp at a time (a large slotted spoon works well for this), being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the shrimp until the coating is golden-brown and the shrimp are cooked through, about 2-3 minutes. Remove the shrimp to a paper towel lined plate, season with salt, and continue frying until all shrimp are cooked.
  5. While the shrimp are frying, make the Honey Sriracha Dipping Sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, sriracha, honey, lemon zest, and salt and black pepper to taste. Top with the sliced scallions and serve alongside the honey sriracha fried shrimp for dipping!
